On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, award-winning playwright Winsome Pinnock makes her National Theatre premiere with The Authenticator, a gripping gothic psychological thriller directed by Miranda Cromwell, where three women uncover darker-than-imagined secrets hidden within a stately home’s mysterious diaries.
The Authenticator
Award-winning playwright Winsome Pinnock is set to make history with the world premiere of her new play, The Authenticator, at London’s prestigious National Theatre. This marks the first time one of Pinnock’s works has premiered on one of the National’s stages, following her celebrated career that includes landmark plays such as Leave Taking and Rockets and Blue Lights.

Pinnock, widely regarded as a leading voice in British theatre, has earned numerous accolades over the decades. Her work has been recognized with prestigious honours including the George Devine Award, the Pearson Plays on Stage Award for Best Play of the Year, the Unity Theatre Trust Award, and the Alfred Fagon Award. Known for her insightful explorations of identity, family, race, and history, Pinnock’s plays often blend sharp social commentary with compelling storytelling. Leave Taking, her breakthrough piece first produced in 1987, remains a seminal work examining the experiences of a British Caribbean family in North London, touching on themes of migration, generational conflict, and belonging.
The Authenticator reunites Pinnock with director Miranda Cromwell, a National Theatre Artistic Associate who previously collaborated with her on the acclaimed Rockets and Blue Lights. Cromwell’s recent credits include a highly praised production of Death of a Salesman. Their partnership brings together two innovative artists for what promises to be a tense and atmospheric production.

A House Full of Secrets
Described as a gripping gothic psychological thriller, The Authenticator centres on three women drawn into a web of hidden truths. Eccentric artist Fenella Harford, played by Sylvestra Le Touzel, inherits her family’s stately home, Harford Hall, and soon uncovers a stash of mysterious hidden diaries. Intrigued, she enlists young academic Marva (Cherrelle Skeete) to verify their authenticity.
Marva brings along her brilliant but overlooked mentor, Abi (Rakie Ayola), and the trio embarks on a quest for answers. What begins as an intellectual exercise quickly spirals into something far more unsettling, as they confront secrets buried deep within the house—darker and more disturbing than anyone anticipated. The play explores themes of inheritance, truth, deception, and the lingering shadows of the past in a classic country-house setting infused with gothic tension.
