Portland’s music scene has a new, mesmerizing voice in Wooden Overcoat. The project, led by multi-instrumentalist Brant Hajek, has unveiled “Finally Arrived,” the second single from their upcoming debut EP, Hello Sunbeam. Following the warm, reverb-drenched introduction of their first track, “Home,” this new release marks another step into a lush, hypnotic soundscape that is already garnering praise for its ability to bridge the gap between classic shoegaze atmosphere and understated indie-pop.
A Hypnotic Sonic Journey
At the core of “Finally Arrived” is a rhythmic, trance-like pulse. Hajek anchors the track with viscous, layered guitars and steady, deliberate percussion. The result is a sound that feels simultaneously expansive and intimate—a hallmark of the project’s lo-fi garage-psych influence.
Critics have noted that the track sits perfectly within the lineage of the genre, evoking the atmospheric depth of Slowdive alongside the grounded, melodic pull of Mojave 3. It is a testament to Hajek’s dedication to sound design; having recorded the EP in a rented basement, he spent significant time experimenting with gear and textures to capture a specific, immersive mood.
Visual Storytelling and Creative Collaboration
The single is accompanied by a striking new video directed by Italian multi-arts visionary Francesca Bonci. Known for her collaborations with legendary acts such as The Dandy Warhols, Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, and members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Bonci brings a distinct visual identity to the release. Her work complements the dream-pop aesthetic of the band, providing a surreal visual backdrop to the song’s themes.
Themes of Isolation and Fragile Relationships
While the music provides a warm, shimmering sanctuary, the lyrical content of “Finally Arrived” dives into deeper, more complex waters. Written after a long period of digital isolation, the song serves as a critique of how modern culture—heavily influenced by social media—can lead to the commodification of human relationships.
Hajek notes that the track is a blend of personal experiences, touching on grief, the difficulties of maintaining connections, and the strange, often unhealthy fascination society holds for fame and the desire to become larger than life. Ultimately, the song laments the tendency to view friends and companions as replaceable assets, highlighting the inherent fragility of human bonds.

The Evolution from Studio to Stage
Though Wooden Overcoat began as a solitary, DIY pursuit—with Hajek playing every instrument during the recording process to maintain a sense of personal intimacy—the project has since expanded. To bring these layered compositions to life in a live setting, Hajek has assembled a full band featuring Dillon Glusker (bass), Mac (guitar), and Brian Levin (drums and backing vocals).
Despite the somewhat morbid origins of the band’s name—an old Americana slang term for a coffin—the project thrives on a balance of dark, mystical imagery and genuine, light-hearted warmth.
