On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Wooden Overcoat has released their dreamy debut single “Home,” a lush, reverb-soaked gem blending warm 60s jangle rock, shoegaze haze, and intimate indie vibes.
Portland psychedelic pop-rock project Wooden Overcoat has released its shimmering debut single “Home,” the first official preview of the upcoming Hello Sunbeam EP. The track wraps listeners in lush reverb and a signature “gooey haze,” blending warm 60s jangle rock, shoegaze textures, and modern indie rock energy into an immersive sonic experience.

A Solitary Beginning Blooms into Something Special
Multi-instrumentalist Brant Hajek created Wooden Overcoat during the isolation of 2020. After a notable hiatus from music, he returned to songs originally written in his late teens. What began as a personal self-production exercise in a rented basement quickly evolved into a passionate exploration of soundscapes, effects, and spontaneous creativity. Hajek handled every instrument on the studio recordings, preserving an intimate DIY spirit while experimenting freely and following bursts of inspiration.
“Home” emerged naturally during this period. The song captures a sense of impermanence and fleeting beauty—acknowledging something wonderful even when it cannot last. It reflects on naturally paired elements, like people or moments in nature, that slowly fade, encouraging listeners to appreciate the present and find magic in transient experiences. Though the themes touch on inevitable endings, the music radiates warmth and light rather than darkness.
Sonic Palette: Dream-Pop, Psych, and Shoegaze Warmth
“Home” drifts in with tape echo, soft-focus distortion, and layered harmonies. It occupies a sweet spot between dreamy pop and blissed-out psychedelia, offering glowing, oceanic textures that feel inviting and emotionally resonant. The intimate vocal delivery anchors the track, while the production merges lo-fi garage psych roots with 90s shoegaze atmosphere and sun-drenched 60s influences.
The project draws from a rich lineage including Spiritualized, Galaxie 500, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Beatles, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Velvet Underground, Broadcast, My Bloody Valentine, and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Fans of Holy Wave, Night Beats, The Vacant Lots, Mild High Club, DIIV, Beach Fossils, Temples, Alvvays, Tame Impala, and The Black Angels will find much to love in Wooden Overcoat’s warm, immersive sound.

Surreal Visuals by Francesca Bonci
The official video for “Home,” directed by Italian multi-arts visionary Francesca Bonci, perfectly complements the track’s dreamy atmosphere. This marks the first collaboration between Wooden Overcoat and Bonci, whose previous work includes projects with The Dandy Warhols, Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Collin Hegna, and many others. The visuals enhance the song’s themes of beauty, impermanence, and hazy introspection.
From Solo Project to Full Live Band
While Hajek built the foundation alone to maintain creative intimacy, Wooden Overcoat has now expanded into a complete live outfit. Hajek leads on guitar and vocals, joined by Dillon Glusker on bass, Mac on guitar, and Brian Levin on drums and backing vocals. Together, the band aims to create a communal, dreamlike space for like-minded listeners.
The name “Wooden Overcoat”—an old Americana euphemism for a coffin—perfectly embodies the project’s playful balance of moody, mystical imagery and light-hearted humor. Even in its more introspective moments, the music remains rooted in warmth, inside jokes, and emotional honesty.

A Promising New Voice in Psychedelic Pop
With “Home,” Wooden Overcoat establishes a distinctive voice in the psychedelic and dream-pop scenes. The track offers both nostalgic warmth and fresh energy, setting high expectations for the full Hello Sunbeam EP. Based in Portland’s vibrant creative community, the project blends personal reflection with communal joy, inviting listeners into a glowing, reverb-soaked world where beauty and impermanence coexist.
Stay tuned for more from Wooden Overcoat as they continue to share transmissions from their hazy, heartfelt sonic universe.
