The inspiration for MODERN WIHEGOU took shape in Azia’s mother’s village in Ivory Coast, where the absence of maternal presence ignited a deep yearning to connect with her lineage. This experience led her to explore ways to weave elements of her Bhété culture into her music. The EP became a vehicle for merging ancestral knowledge with contemporary artistry, combining AfroJazz with indigenous Bhété chants and storytelling traditions. Azia’s innovative approach incorporates sampled voices of her mother and grandmother, creating rich sonic textures that honor her matriarchal lineage.

Azia wrote and recorded MODERN WIHEGOU using a portable studio, allowing her to capture the essence of her spiritual and geographical journey. Singing in both English and Bhété, she taps into the oral traditions of her heritage, where songs serve as vessels for memory and healing. One standout track, “Lagô” (meaning “God” in Bhété), was written in Dakar during a period of profound spiritual reflection, highlighting how faith and inner alignment guide her creative process.
