Born in Calcutta and raised in London, Rajan rose from student journalism at Cambridge to become one of Britain’s most dynamic media figures. He previously served as Editor of The Independent at age 29, became the BBC’s first Media Editor, and has presented on Radio 4’s Today programme while hosting University Challenge.

Rajan expressed excitement about visiting Aldborough, highlighting the appeal of the North Yorkshire countryside and its community. He plans to share stories from over two decades in journalism, including insights from high-profile interviews, behind-the-scenes media experiences, and anecdotes from University Challenge.

The 2026 festival opens with the Orchestra of Opera North performing Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, one of the world’s most beloved classical works.

Britain’s favourite clarinettist Emma Johnson returns with her star-studded trio, presenting masterpieces by Beethoven, Brahms, and Shostakovich. Pianist Lucy Parham brings I, Clara, a compelling blend of words and music exploring the life of Clara Schumann, narrated by acclaimed actress Joanna David, known for roles in Downton Abbey and Inspector Morse.

New to the festival is pianist Sarah Beth Briggs, a former child prodigy and the youngest-ever finalist in the BBC Young Musician competition. The five-star opera company Wild Arts returns with Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro.

Violinist Harriet Mackenzie joins Mexican guitarist Morgan Szymanski for a romantic programme featuring Vivaldi, Piazzolla, and Paganini. The festival concludes with the popular Last Night Outdoor Concert in the grounds of Aldborough Manor. Headline act Definitely Oasis, an internationally acclaimed tribute band, will perform the anthems of a generation for around 1,200 attendees. Guests are encouraged to bring picnics, dance under the stars, and enjoy a spectacular firework display.

Festival Director Robert Ogden brings deep musical expertise to the role. A former operatic countertenor, he was a chorister at Westminster Cathedral, trained at King’s College, Cambridge, the Royal Northern College of Music, and the Netherlands Opera Studio. He performed extensively in opera houses and concert halls worldwide before leading his family’s renowned jewellery business in Harrogate. In January 2026, he will take up the position of Chief Executive of The Temple Music Foundation.
