Tell me a bit about who you are.
Sure, first, thank you so much JJ for this interview!
Well, I’m William J Bruce III, a writer, producer and celebrity publicist. Born in Canada, I have also lived in the USA, and the Philippines. I am happily married to my wife of almost 11 years 🙂
When did you first WANT to write a book?
I would have to say that the writing bug first bit me when I was around middle school age. In particular my 8th grade teacher Dr. Nancy Maynes was really inspirational. She taught more in the line of Montessori even though we were just in a public school. She made the time to sit down with each student to understand our interests and work with us. Oh and she drove a Mustang! Today she is an Assistant Professor and Chair of the Concurrent Education Program at Nipissing University.
When did you take a step to start writing?
So in the eighth grade I started writing a book for class (lol I never finished it, sorry Mrs. Maynes). I let the pen somewhat rest on the page for a number of years and didn’t try again until 2006 when I was going through a tough time. I was on the ground looking up and everything felt like a dream at that point. So I thought I would just go for it, as I felt like I had nothing to lose.
How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?
So my first book; it’s hard to say as I kept going back and forth between a few ideas. But I would say around a year.

Still writing this one, I’ll let you know when it gets finished 🙂
What made you want to write Hate?
I had seen the news of the deaths of Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, and Dolores O’Riordan and as a fan it was hard to hear of their deaths. It brought back memories of the 90’s when we lost Kurt Cobain, Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. Though I never knew any of these people I felt like I knew a bit of them through their music. I remember someone I knew making a rather cold comment about celebrities and it just got me upset. I may not have known these people, but I know other celebrities and it made me think, what if it was one of my friends in the industry? So I sort of wrote this as a way to (I guess) process my own feelings. Celebrities are people too.
What were your biggest challenges with writing Hate?
I encountered two big challenges. The first being that this book is really emotional for me. I wanted the book to be authentic and so I sort of tried using method acting to bring about a scene, it was harder than I thought, I found myself investing a lot of emotion in it and even though its a thriller novel, the truth is it’s honestly more personal than my memoir. The second challenge somewhat ties into the first. I had basically told the character, “look you have this page, or this paragraph to lose your cool, but realized he needed more space to be able to bring about his emotions. This was hard as I didn’t want the book to be laced with too many profanities, but this isn’t my story, it’s his…or is it?

Life.
Who or what inspired you when creating your Antagonist?
Death.
What is the inciting incident of Hate?
The sudden death of the protagonist’s friend.
What is the main conflict of Hate?
Oh I’m sorry, that one’s a secret 😉
Did you plot Hate in advance, or fly by the seat of your pants and write freely?
So there was some planning in that I knew certain story arcs and I in essence interviewed each character prior to writing. That said, the story develops a lot on its own as too do the characters.
Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Hate need?
Not there yet, but there will be some editorial support needed I’m sure.
What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a story?
Have fun.
Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?
There is a novel I have been working on and off in the background, its an adventure type novel with the goal of something like a “Neverending Story”. Maybe one day that will get published.
And, finally, are you proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?
It was very much worth it. I’ve always wanted to leave something behind after I am gone. I hope this book will suffice.
