Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary composer renowned for shaping the iconic sound of the Final Fantasy series, has announced his first large-scale original orchestral composition written specifically for the concert hall. Titled Merregnon: Heart of Ice, the symphonic fairy tale will be released worldwide by Decca Classics on June 19, 2026.

Uematsu’s music has accompanied Final Fantasy since its debut in 1987, helping the franchise achieve global sales exceeding 207 million copies. While his melodies have long been performed by orchestras in dedicated concerts, Merregnon: Heart of Ice marks his first standalone work conceived from the ground up for symphonic performance rather than interactive media.

The album was recorded at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra. Academy Award-winning actress Alicia Vikander provides the narration, bringing the original story by German author Frauke Angel to life.

The Story: A Heartwarming Journey Through Eternal Winter

Merregnon: Heart of Ice follows Kjugo, a cheerful wooden robot, as he travels across a frozen landscape in search of his creator, the inventor Nuobi. The land of Merregnon remains trapped in endless winter under the control of the bitter Ice Wind Dancer, with its inhabitants forced to live hidden beneath the snow.

Inspired by classics such as Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, the work assigns each main character its own distinct musical motif and orchestral color. This approach allows the entire drama to unfold through music and narration. The narrative moves from underground workshops and icy labyrinths to a climactic confrontation that brings warmth and renewal to the frozen world.

English narration was adapted by the award-winning writing team of Ciaran Murtagh and Andrew Barnett Jones. Standout musical moments include the lively “Sliding Through The Snow” and the deeply emotional “Frozen Tears.”

The project is part of the ongoing Merregnon series led by producer and artistic director Thomas Böcker. The series aims to introduce new generations to symphonic music through engaging fantasy storytelling that families can enjoy together.

Norwegian artist Tobias Orderud created the album’s artwork and illustrations, vividly depicting the characters and the wintry world of Merregnon. The recording follows successful live premiere performances in Germany, with the London Symphony Orchestra delivering Uematsu’s richly melodic score full of lyrical passages, rhythmic energy, and orchestral highlights.
