The prominent New York City post-punk duo Frenchy and the Punk has reached an unexpected and difficult crossroads. Coinciding with the release of their latest music video for the single “War on War,” singer Samantha Stephenson was recently diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer.

Discovered during a routine medical check-up just before the band hit the road—but only confirmed while already out on tour—the diagnosis has forced the duo to make the tough decision to cancel all remaining 2026 tour dates, including their planned spring, summer, and UK shows.

A Sudden Hiatus for an Independent Act

For full-time independent artists like Stephenson and guitarist Scott Helland, touring serves as their primary livelihood. Typically playing around 100 shows a year, the sudden halt to their extensive tour schedule creates a massive financial gap during an already incredibly challenging time.

To help navigate the loss of income and cover essential living expenses while Stephenson focuses entirely on her treatment and recovery, Helland has launched a GoFundMe campaign. Despite the uncertain timeline for their return to the stage, the band remains hopeful about focusing on health and continuing to write new music. Released via Pittsburgh-based label Distortion Productions, the video for “War on War” now carries an even more urgent resonance. The single, which serves as a commentary on the erosion of truth, the manipulation of power by a select few, and a universal call for unity, was filmed and edited by Stephenson herself in New York State.

The track boasts impressive behind-the-scenes production credentials. It was mixed and mastered by William Faith (known for his work with The Bellwether Syndicate and Faith and the Muse) at William Faith Music Production. Vocal recording and production were handled by Hillary Johnson at Kale Shelter Studios, an industry veteran who has worked with icons like Jeff Buckley, The Ramones, and The Misfits.

“War on War” marks the band’s second release with Distortion Productions, following late 2025’s “Not Under Your Spell.” The label signed the duo after head-hunter Jim Semonik witnessed their captivating performance at the Dark Force Fest in New Jersey.

Formed in 2005, Frenchy and the Punk has secured a reputation as a leading force in the modern post-punk movement, even earning a spot on Yahoo! Music’s “Top 25 US Duos” list. • Scott Helland is a veteran of the US hardcore punk scene. As a co-founder of Deep Wound (alongside Dinosaur Jr. legends J Mascis and Lou Barlow) and Outpatients, Helland has shared stages with legendary acts like Black Flag and Agnostic Front. He also commands a solo project, Guitarmy of One.
• Samantha Stephenson enters the collaboration from the world of classical piano, dance, and visual arts, providing the driving, atmospheric, and transcendent layer to their instrumentation.

Following the critical success of their albums Zen Ghost (2022) and Midnight Garden (2024), the fiercely DIY duo has cultivated a fiercely loyal grassroots following.
