On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Katie Schecter’s new single “Hide My Weapons,” a raw and soulful collaboration with husband Nick Bockrath, sets the stage for her genre-defying album Empress, out October 17, celebrating love, conflict, and feminine power.
Hide My Weapons
Nashville-based artist Katie Schecter has released her latest single, “Hide My Weapons,” a track from her forthcoming album Empress, set to drop on October 17. Co-written with her husband, Nick Bockrath, the lead guitarist of Cage the Elephant, the song captures the complexities of their relationship as partners, creative collaborators, and parents.

Bockrath, currently on tour supporting Oasis, brings an instrumental foundation to the track, while Schecter layers it with raw, emotional lyrics born from a real-life disagreement. Their dynamic as a couple and artistic duo reflects a blend of passion and tension, showcasing the multifaceted nature of love. Their daughter, Only, has already been immersed in their musical world, experiencing concerts from the womb during Schecter’s performances opening for Beck and watching her father perform for a sold-out crowd at MetLife Stadium with Oasis.
The single “Hide My Weapons” is an autobiographical snapshot of a lovers’ quarrel, crafted in the heat of the moment. Bockrath’s instrumental provided the groundwork, and Schecter’s melody and lyrics channel the intensity of intimate relationships—where love and conflict coexist. The song highlights their ability to push each other’s buttons while remaining deeply connected as best friends and collaborators. This dynamic fuels their creative process, resulting in a track that feels both personal and universal.
Empress
Schecter’s upcoming album Empress, recorded live to tape at New York City’s Diamond Mine Studio while she was pregnant, marks a pivotal moment in her artistic and personal journey. The album embraces her femininity and imperfections, reflecting the transformative experience of creating life while crafting music. Produced by Bockrath, Empress features a stellar lineup, including Nick Movshon and Homer Steinweiss on rhythm, Russ Pahl on pedal steel, Leon Michels on piano, and Matt Combs on strings.
The album’s soulful sound draws inspiration from a blend of influences, evoking a dream collaboration between artists like Doris Troy and Amy Winehouse. Schecter aims to create a unified listening experience that explores shared human emotions—love, fear, dreams, and the ebb and flow of control.

Leading up to Empress, Schecter has shared two other singles: “Pay It No Mind,” a reflective piece about letting go of minor worries, and “Run River Run,” a vibrant mix of rock, soul, and pop with a forward-driving energy. To celebrate the album’s release, Schecter will perform at Nashville’s Soft Junk on October 17, joined by Zac Cockrell of Alabama Shakes on bass, promising a memorable live experience.

Katie Schecter
Originally from New York City and now based in Nashville, Katie Schecter is known for her genre-defying sound, blending rock, soul, and pop with a distinctive edge. Empress is her third studio album, following her 2017 self-titled EP and 2020’s Bad For Business, which established her as a bold, boundary-pushing artist.
Her career highlights include performing at a sold-out show for Beck while eight months pregnant and opening for The Zombies at SXSW in 2023. Schecter’s vocals also appear on Cage the Elephant’s Grammy-nominated albums Neon Pill and the 2020 Best Rock Album winner Social Cues, further cementing her place in the modern music landscape.
With Empress, Schecter continues to evolve, weaving her roles as an artist, mother, and collaborator into a powerful narrative of growth and connection.
