Like bathrooms and kitchens, sometimes careers need to be refreshed, even when they’re comfortable and functioning. If an important milestone anniversary is on the horizon, tearing up those floorboards feels even more urgent. Just ask Alan Chang.

For nearly twenty years, Californian-born Chang performed as Michael Bublé’s musical director, co-writer and pianist, a gig that sent the musician all over the world on sold-out tours, performing monster hits like “Home” and “Haven’t Met You Yet” that he co-wrote for the mega star Canuck crooner. However, as 2019 came to an end, and Chang’s 40th birthday celebration drew nearer, he started to think about what opportunities lay beyond the world he’d worked in for nearly half of his life.

Love As A Weapon

Now Chang is releasing his new single, the gently propulsive and arpeggio’d Love As a Weapon,  with lead piano joined by an atypically up front rhythm section from bass legend Pino Palladio and drummer Tamir Barzilay. The track draws its eccentric lyrical symbolism from Chang’s depature from the Bublé camp. Chang explained that he wrote his new single a couple of days after telling Michael he was quitting, which was almost like asking a partner for a divorce because of all the feelings it brought up. He found writing this song to be a sort of therapy.

To write his new music, Chang is working with his fiance Alex Lilly, a singer songwriter in her own right, as well as music producers Ryan Lerman (Scary Pockets, Lizzy McAlpine, Buble, Ben Folds, John Legend) and Adam Greenholtz.

This single denotes the start of a new era for Alan Chang, and it’s one you’ll want to be a part of.
