New Memoir, The Vetilante By Alastair England, Recounts What Happens When A Veterinary Psychopath Takes Matters Into His Own Hands

On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, The Vetilante – Memoirs of a Veterinary Psychopath by Alastair England, sees a vet avenging euthanised animals by going on a killing spree like no other.

The Vetilante

A chilling tale from a retired vet, The Vetilante by Alastair England, will have everyone who has ever had a pet put down cautiously looking over their shoulder with a character who kills those humans who have decided to have their pets euthanised.

With intelligent writing and pitch perfect plot, the narrator goes from being bullied at school and working on Saturdays in a vets practice to becoming a vet with easy access to drugs such as ketamine and pentobarbital (the drug used for animal euthanasia), to embarking on his avenging killing spree.

While vets deal with euthanasia all of the time, it’s mostly old animals or those with an incurable disease. However, it is sometimes for behavioural reasons, and those animals have no say; it is up to the owner and the vet. Animal abuse and cruelty are endemic in the world and, apart from poorly funded charities there is very little policing. But imagine if there was someone avenging abused animals; a veterinary vigilante. Someone on the animal’s side, euthanizing the cruel human on the animal’s behalf.

All of the places in this book are real. There are very few names and no dates, and, after all, people disappear all the time. Is this a work of fiction, or the true memories of a veterinary psychopath: The Vetilante?

Published against the backdrop of vets currently being asked to euthanise young and healthy XL Bullys, The Vetilante may be a short read, just 151 pages, but it packs a huge literary punch and leaves readers hoping Alastair England more unsettling plots percolating.

Alastair England

Alastair England is a retired vet living in South West France and has worked in the UK, Southern Africa, Bahrain and Guernsey. He has worked in private practice as well as worked with animal charities.

Animals are being euthanised at owner’s request for a whole host of reasons, including old age, behaviour, and inability to afford the fees. These animals have no say in their fate and currently vets are being asked to euthanise young and healthy XL Bully dogs as from 1st February 2024. It will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully dog in England and Wales unless it has a Certificate of Exemption.

Vets are able to prescribe and dispense drugs. They have to use animal licenced ones first but can use human drugs if there is no licenced veterinary equivalent, for example morphine, ketamine, fentanyl as well as having access to huge quantities of pentobarbital, the drug used for animal euthanasia. All the above brings into play a whole host of ethical issues, and my book takes their potential to the extremes.
