The narrative centers on fourteen-year-old Ben, whose life changes irreversibly on a bright October morning when his mother dies unexpectedly. This tragedy affects Ben, his father, and his six-year-old brother, nicknamed Crumb, forcing each family member to confront grief in their own unique way. As they adapt to a profoundly altered reality, they also navigate the reactions and discomfort from those around them, including friends and classmates.

At its core, the story highlights Ben’s relationships—with his family, friends, and the enduring memory of his mother. Even in her absence, she remains a significant presence in his life, shaping his journey toward acceptance. The book portrays loss not as an endpoint but as a catalyst for discovering new joys and connections, ultimately delivering a message of hope and renewal.

Addressing a Challenging Topic

Death is a subject often avoided in literature for young adults, yet Höfler approaches it with honesty and sensitivity. The novel educates readers by openly discussing this inevitable aspect of life, encouraging reflection and conversation. It serves not only those who have experienced personal loss but also teenagers who have not, helping them gain insight into the emotions and challenges faced by bereaved peers. This fosters empathy and equips young readers with the knowledge to offer meaningful support to friends going through similar experiences.
