Meeting Christina and Her Bucket List
Christina is a senior at an ultraconservative southern evangelical college and the daughter of a once-respected fundamentalist pastor. Following months of intense therapy, she is ready for a drastic change after years of being told that the modern world leads to eternal damnation. To figure out what life looks like outside that world, she creates the Jezebel List.
Her bucket list includes everyday experiences that most people take completely for granted. She wants to attend a pagan festival, get a Brazilian wax, watch pornography, explore a science museum, have a one-night stand, and take the Lord’s name in vain with relish. Going to a science museum and buying alcohol at a liquor store represent her desire to be light, flirty, fun, and modern.
The Accidental Documentary Partnership
At a pagan festival, Christina catches the eye of documentary filmmaker Danny Reeves. Danny spent years investigating the injustices of the Evangelical South and recently suffered professional burnout. When Christina reveals the Jezebel List, Danny realizes her story has the potential to resonate with millions.
Christina agrees to be the subject of his next documentary under one condition. They must complete her list together. As they check items off the list, neither expects the romantic spark to burn brighter and hotter between them.

Examining Shame and Genuine Freedom
The story does an incredible job exploring the damage caused by a culture built around shame and control. Ordinary preferences, personal sexuality, and mental health get reframed as moral defects or spiritual failures. For instance, the characters genuinely believe that things like Brazilian waxes are connected to severe wrongdoing.
Christina’s journey shows that freedom is not just doing the opposite of everything taught during an oppressive upbringing. She learns to figure out what she actually wants for herself. Danny provides space for her to explore, change her mind, and decide which parts of her background to reject and which parts to keep.
A Tender and Insightful Romance
Watching Christina experience ordinary milestones is both heartbreaking and endearing. When she Googles how to swirl and taste wine before trying it, the moment captures her charming curiosity. Danny falls for her while she is still figuring everything out, making the romance feel tender and authentic.
Alisa Dean writes stories that blend love, desire, self-discovery, and partnership. Christina remains much more than her trauma, driven by a deep desire to claim a life that belongs entirely to her.
