Captive In Dubai

In his unforgettable and mind-blowing memoir, Captive In Dubai: A Tale Of Redemption And Resilience, Michael Smith shares the catalogue of injustices which resulted in him spending over twelve years in prison (two in Thailand and ten in UAE), constantly held hostage to the unpredictability of legal proceedings of foreign lands.

Taking you from the depths of despair to the heights of hope Captive In Dubai is the inspiring and incredible story of one man’s fight against injustice and his unwavering pursuit of truth. Readers are taken on a life-changing journey as they witness the power of resilience, determination and the dogged pursuit of justice as Smith shares his experiences.

For those expecting page after page detailing the hell experienced whilst being incarcerated, Captive In Dubai  is not that book. Offering invaluable insights on the importance of international co-operation and the sometimes unpredictable nature of legal proceedings in a foreign land, Smith’s mission is to share with readers the systemic failure of the British diplomatic service in terms of his release, the abuse and unaccountable power of the UAE authorities; and the judicial failure and corruption that is rife in the two countries responsible for his imprisonment.

This book will change your life by:

– Inspiring you to persevere in the face of adversity and to never give up on seeking truth and justice
– Empowering you to stand up to injustice and fight for your rights
– Opening your eyes to the importance of international co-operation in resolving cases

A must-read for all those interested in politics, justice and human rights, Captive In Dubai not only illuminates from the personal perspective (resilience and the importance for standing up for your rights) but on a macro level, highlights the only way to prevent such injustices being repeated, has to be international collaboration.

At a time of increased scrutiny of governments in the Middle East, Captive in Dubai – A Tale of Redemption and Resilience raises important questions about legal, political and health issues.

Shaking people’s faith in justice, government, and human rights, in my case the British government ignored documented abuses of accepted international law. I was tried and sentenced for the same case three times with judgments issued in absentia. After the third trial, which I was not permitted to attend, nobody could find evidence that it existed. My lawyer and the British could not get any details about the case, including the judgment and yet I was given an additional 10 year sentence.

Having contracted HIV and cancer, both of which nearly killed me, this story provides the clearest demonstration of the United Kingdom’s declining influence and willingness to put political expediency before protection of their own citizens when dealing with oil rich Gulf States.
