Like many people across the world, I lost my job as a result of the Pandemic. After working several years as a banker and financial manager of a multi-million-dollar business, I was at a crossroads. I felt that I had built up my experience and earned a valuable expertise in regard to small business financial management that I could offer, especially during such a time of uncertainty for business owners. I did not want to go and look for another “typical” 9-to-5, and so in May of 2021, I launched Skyview CFO.

Since May, Skyview has assisted more than 20 small businesses with various financial services. From business plans to virtual bookkeeping, to forecasting, Skyview assures business owners that their finances are properly being taken care of.

Why I Started The Skyview Blog

While trying to grow Skyview’s initial client base, I was discussing with one of my friends how to increase the website’s search engine optimization (SEO), so that more leads could find my website. He mentioned that having a blog on my site with articles that mention various key terms associated with my industry could boost the SEO.

I have always been a writer at heart. In college, I contributed to major sports blogs such as Bleacher Report. I also wrote a manuscript for fun once. I’ve always had the creative writing spirit in me. I thought that a blog attached to my website was a brilliant idea to increase my traffic, while also giving me the creative writing outlet I still craved.

I began writing blog posts about how Skyview could help small businesses, as well as my thoughts and opinions on hot economic topics affecting my target demographic. Writing these posts not only fueled my creative passion but kept me up to date on current events and prepared me for questions by my clients about the state of the economy and how it could potentially affect their business.

Promoting The Skyview Content

By utilizing social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, sharing my content led to an increase in engagement and conversations about my writing and business. For the first time in my life, I felt that my written word meant something to people, more than the hobby it used to be.

As I continued to write more articles, I thought about how I could parlay these efforts into establishing even more credibility for my brand. I figured that since I already had a lot of content focused on helping entrepreneurs and small business owners, I could combine a lot of my posts and create a business-help book.

Writing My Book

Since my college days of sports blogging, publishing my very own book was a huge goal of mine. I always thought that, even if no one ever bought a copy, seeing my name on a real physical book would be a dream come true.

I had tried writing fiction novels before. I’ve written dozens of first chapters but was never able to get over the hump of “where is this story actually going?”. However, once I began writing the non-fiction book, the words flowed more naturally, and I finished my first draft in about two months.

As I came up with ideas for chapters and useful topics for the book, I was also able to use the research to write blog posts simultaneously. I found a way to reach my goal of publishing a book, while continuing to increase engagement for my business.

Connecting With Entrepreneurs

During the book writing process, I was able to connect with other entrepreneurs who have had very successful careers. Being able to speak with them and hear their experience and opinions was both insightful for me and gave my content a wider perspective.

After many reads, edits, and drafts, I was finally able to self-publish the book on Amazon at the end of February. The title of the book is, Sky’s The Limit: Navigating a Business Launch, it focuses on the various ideals that new entrepreneurs need to by aware of when they decide to do what I did: go off on their own and start a business.

It was a thrill to receive the first copy in the mail, especially since the cover was designed by my mother, a very talented painter. I always told her that if I ever published a book, she would paint the cover. Every time I walk in my office and see the book on my shelf, I remember that if I put my mind to something, it is accomplishable, one page, one post at a time.

Helping Small Businesses

The best part about my book is that I can always expand it and release revised editions as my career as a consultant continues, enhancing my experience, expertise, and network. Last week, I was approached by a business journalist who wanted to know more about how small business owners could combat the rapid rise in inflation. She used my opinions for her article, and to my surprise, I saw my quotes featured on NASDAQ’s website.
