From an early age, I was inspired to write stories, and often made notes in one of two notebooks (one for writing at home, one for writing on the go—by hand since laptops, etc. didn’t exist in those days!). These notes were usually of a passionate romantic theme, though some detailed my observations about the world around me, including sad and disturbing stories I’d heard from, or about, other people. I love people and I’m a good listener, so people often confide in me. Fortunately, I also have a good memory, and have been able to utilize other people’s experiences as well as my own in my stories.
The first time I completed a full-length story was a play I wrote in Shakespearean language at age 15, while I was at school in the UK. Unfortunately, during my travels, I lost the red notebook in which I wrote it. Then, life got really busy when I married as a teenager in Trinidad and had three babies, so writing took a backseat for a while. However, I would write anecdotes in a notebook whenever I could get a little peace and quiet, which was not often. In the meantime, I developed my own art medium, which the media titled “Unique Stainings on Wood,” and I won the Prize Of Excellence out of a 52 countries competition and exhibition in France for one of my paintings (You can view some of my paintings on my website: patriciadarcylaughlin.com).
While having much success with my paintings, raising my very busy and intelligent children, helping my husband in his business career, being involved in fundraising for schools and charities, and world-traveling, I managed to mentally store the stories I wanted to write somewhere in the labyrinth of my brain. After the children were grown and at college, I was finally able to take some time, with my husband’s encouragement and unstinting support, to start some serious writing—a novel that had been brewing in me for decades.
Loving To Read
I am a voracious reader. I enjoy books about history, religions, biographies, and other genres, but my first choice is almost always to read romances, particularly Adult Romances. It bothered me that many romance books I had read in the past described mediocre sexual situations that were not based on reality, and often unexciting. Several of them approached the characters’ sexualities from a puritanical or shameful perspective, and were usually boring.
I became determined to write about the real enjoyment couples in love experience while having sex, and challenged myself to write some of the best detailed sex scenes I have ever read! LOL. I believe in putting a smile on people’s faces as well as stimulating their juices. As a result, some of my sex scenes are quite hilarious, and some might even be shocking to certain readers, but in a good way! A number of readers, of both genders, have actually thanked me, “for the education!”
Adult Romance
Having lived in countries with monarchies, I decided that my Adult Romance would occur between royalty and commoners. Traveling through every continent except Antarctica, and visiting numerous historical sites and ancient ruins, I learned the true history of countless non-Patriarchal religions that had existed whereby females were considered equal to males.
The interminable domination and discrimination still practiced against females today in Patriarchal religions and societies worldwide, compelled me to conduct further research and weave historical facts into my fictional narrative so that I can enlighten and empower readers. In her ‘Equality Speeches,’ my female protagonist exposes these abominations, and educates people about the Patriarchal barbarian tribes that invented the concept of ‘a single God, and it must be male!’ My male protagonist advocates for saving the planet from destruction because of abuse by pollution and the wars of expansive, power-greedy rulers. Thus, the multi-genre Sacrifices and Kingdoms Series was born!
The Work Of Writing
I worked tirelessly to research, write, and edit two 560+ page novels thus far, with two more books in progress. After failing to get an agent to represent me to get a publisher for my first book because I was not a “celebrity,” I decided to go the self-publishing route. I went through Kindle Direct Publishing as well as Ingram Spark. I contracted with a PR team to help me with marketing and promotion, a book shepherd to guide me through the entire process, and a part time personal assistant to help with the additional tasks that never cease to end with being a published author.
I have been working to build a following on my social media for the past year since the release of the first book in my series.
