On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, celebrate fifty years of breathtaking artistry with Liona Boyd’s deeply personal new album This Thing Called Love – an exquisite blend of classical guitar mastery, heartfelt duets, and timeless songs that capture the joy, passion, and bittersweet beauty of a life in music.
Liona Boyd
Internationally renowned Canadian classical guitarist, singer, and author Liona Boyd marks an extraordinary fifty-year career with the release of her most personal album to date, This Thing Called Love. Known worldwide as “The First Lady of the Guitar,” Boyd continues to blend her signature classical sound with folk, pop, and world influences, creating a collection that reflects the full spectrum of human emotion.

This Thing Called Love
The new album captures the passion and joy of love alongside the ache of yearning and loss—emotions Boyd has experienced firsthand throughout her life. Produced by her longtime collaborator Peter Bond, This Thing Called Love combines fresh recordings with reimagined versions of cherished earlier works, offering listeners an intimate glimpse into the artist’s emotional world.
The album opens with a warm duet alongside Mark Masri (of The Tenors) on the Everly Brothers’ nostalgic favorite Bye Bye Love. Boyd also revisits two beloved past collaborations: a newly arranged version of Summer Dreams, originally recorded with Olivia Newton-John, and Gordon Lightfoot, a moving tribute first performed with Ronnie Hawkins in honor of their late friend.
Other highlights include the tender romantic ballad Sweet Dreams, the celebratory The Wedding Song—which honors the moment of realizing someone is the person you want to spend your life with—and the playful fantasy piece Tamarinda, inspired by Boyd’s years living in Mexico. More introspective tracks such as Living On Borrowed Time and My Life Alone contemplate the fleeting and fragile nature of existence.
A Legendary Fifty-Year Career

Over five decades, Liona Boyd has released more than thirty albums that have collectively surpassed 100 million streams, with eight achieving gold or platinum status. A five-time Juno Award winner, she has received five honorary doctorates, the Order of Ontario, the Diamond Jubilee Medal, and is an Officer of the Order of Canada. She has been voted best classical guitarist five times in Guitar Player Magazine polls, inducted into their Gallery of Greats, and honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Guitar Museum in the United States.
Boyd has performed for royalty and world leaders, including the British and Spanish royal families, U.S. presidents, and former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Her extensive recording and touring collaborations include Sir Andrew Davis and the English Chamber Orchestra, Yo-Yo Ma, Georges Zamfir, Chet Atkins, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Gordon Lightfoot, Tracy Chapman, Roger Whittaker, and many others.
In addition to composing and arranging hundreds of pieces for guitar, Boyd is an accomplished author. Her bestselling autobiography In My Own Key: My Life in Love and Music was followed by No Remedy for Love in 2017. In 2022 she released her first children’s book, The Cat Who Played Guitar.
An Invitation to the Heart
With This Thing Called Love, Liona Boyd opens the curtain on her emotional life, welcoming listeners into a rich, lyrical world that spans joy, romance, reflection, and gratitude.
