The Inspiration Behind “We Are The People”
“We Are The People” is a collaborative co-write between Lynn Hollyfield and poet, playwright, and story weaver Carol Burbank. The track addresses current societal divisions in the United States by emphasizing the inherent strength found in collective numbers. Ultimately, the song functions as a passionate call to action for citizens to stand together and protect democratic foundations.
Musical Style and Background
Working primarily in a contemporary folk style, the artist blends jazz-influenced chords with bluesy guitar work and passionate vocals. Listeners often compare her sound to an artistic intersection of Mary Chapin Carpenter and Bonnie Raitt, infused with touches of George Gershwin. Growing up on Staten Island, New York, she absorbed diverse musical influences ranging from jazz legends Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra to rock icons The Beatles and Neil Young. Early local performances eventually led to recognition in the folk duo Hollyfield & Spruill, including appearances at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival.
Acclaimed Discography and Career Highlights
Following the launch of a successful solo career, the singer-songwriter released multiple celebrated albums. These records include “Layers” in 2010, “In The Balance” in 2014, and “Look Up” in 2024. These projects secured international and national airplay alongside numerous songwriting accolades, including rankings among the top artists and albums for the International Folk Alliance. During the pandemic, she expanded her creative output by publishing a children’s book titled “The Tree, The Ship and Me.” The book featured an accompanying song that earned recognition as a finalist in the Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest.

The Creation of the Album “Diving In”
The new album, “Diving In,” was produced by Grammy-nominated artist Seth Glier. A spring songwriting challenge and a summer songwriter retreat sparked a serendipitous meeting with Seth Glier. This partnership led to recording 11 songs across five intensive days at Ghost Hit Recording Studios in West Springfield, Massachusetts, just a week before Christmas in 2025. Falling snow blessed the opening day of sessions inside a historic New England church converted into a studio.
The recording sessions featured a circle of talented musicians playing together live. Contributors included Seth Glier, Abbie Gardner, Reed Sutherland, and Rob Griffith, with Kelly Halloran joining mid-week. The resulting album explores human experiences, loss, love, and the paths chosen through difficult times. Most tracks feature a contemporary folk style with traditional undertones and a timeless Americana aesthetic.

Deeply Personal Songwriting
The track “Blindspot” addresses the devastating fentanyl crisis after the personal loss of a family member and a friend. The lyrics process the heavy grief and agonizing questions regarding missed signs and lingering regret. Collaboration on this specific track with Seth Glier began at the Dar Williams Songwriter Retreat in August 2025, establishing it as the very first song recorded for the project.
Ongoing Touring and Community Leadership
Outside of recording and releasing new music, the artist maintains an active tour schedule along the East Coast. Commitment to the broader arts community remains strong through active roles as a host for the Songwriter Association of Washington open mic. Additional leadership includes serving as the Music Director at the Celebration Center for Spiritual Living located in Falls Church, Virginia.
