The Time Capsule Murders

In the storied halls of Cambridge, where ancient spires loom and secrets fester, debut author Alex Crockford delivers a delightfully sharp whodunit with The Time Capsule Murders. Blending the irreverent charm of P.G. Wodehouse with the taut suspense of Richard Osman, this comic mystery introduces an unlikely detective duo: hapless former law student Roger Whiteley and his eccentric former tutor, Professor Gerald Sinclair. Part treasure hunt, part satire, this novel is a refreshing addition to British crime fiction, where no one is quite what they seem, and the bodies pile up with a grin-inducing twist.
Seventeen years ago, a group of Cambridge students, including the bumbling Roger Whiteley, gathered for a pre-graduation party. In a moment of youthful whimsy, they scribbled secret predictions about their futures, sealed them in a time capsule, and buried it with a promise to reunite. Fast forward to the present, and the group—older, but not necessarily wiser—reconvenes to unearth their long-buried hopes. But the reunion takes a deadly turn when one of them is found stabbed to death, and the time capsule vanishes. What should have been a nostalgic lark becomes a tangled web of suspicion, cryptic clues, and sordid secrets.
Enter Roger Whiteley, a floundering everyman who’s in over his head, and Professor Gerald Sinclair, a self-proclaimed genius with a nose for mystery and a penchant for peculiar skills. This odd-couple duo—think Professor T meets Jeeves and Wooster—sets out to solve the crime, following a trail of enigmatic drawings left by the victim and dodging a mysterious bearded man tailing Whiteley through Cambridge’s cobbled streets. As they dig deeper, they uncover links to a college porter’s recent death and a labyrinth of scandals that threaten to unravel the group’s carefully curated facades.
Crockford’s Cambridge is both a picturesque backdrop and a character in its own right, with its ivy-clad colleges and shadowy corners hiding dark deeds. The novel’s tone is its triumph: disarming humor dances alongside grim discoveries, making even the most sinister moments feel oddly buoyant. Fans of Ludwig or The Thursday Murder Club will revel in the witty banter and the puzzle-like plot, as Whiteley and Sinclair race against time to recover the capsule, decode the clues, and catch a killer before they strike again.
What elevates The Time Capsule Murders is its knack for balancing satire with suspense. Crockford pokes fun at the pretensions of academia and the fragility of old friendships while keeping readers guessing with a tightly woven mystery. Who drew the cryptic sketches found with the corpse? What secrets are the group so desperate to keep buried? And why does the time capsule hold such deadly significance? As Whiteley and Sinclair unravel the past, the stakes grow higher, and the danger closer.
Perfect for cozy crime enthusiasts with a taste for humor, The Time Capsule Murders is a rollicking debut that delivers laughs, chills, and a satisfyingly twisty resolution. Crockford has crafted a Cambridge caper that’s as clever as it is entertaining, proving that even in a town steeped in tradition, the past can still hold deadly surprises.

Alex Crockford
I am a lawyer by trade, and live in Cambridge with my wife, eleven-year-old son and two endearingly dopey ragdoll cats. My hope is that this novel and, with a bit of luck and a following wind, its sequels, will make at least some contribution to redressing the balance with Oxford, which remains slightly out in front in the fictional detective stakes, thanks primarily to Mr Colin Dexter.
My biggest claim to fame to date was a two-second cameo as Charlie Weasley in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban—I appear in a moving photograph of the Weasley family on holiday in Egypt and still get a surprising amount of fan mail! To the best of my knowledge, it’s the only job to date I have yet managed to secure based solely on my physical attributes!
