I am thrilled to be collaborating with BBC Maestro and sharing my passion for acting with a wider audience. As an actor, you’re there to interpret the script. It’s only by examining, and fully understanding, the script that you can then have the freedom to develop an intuitive style and deliver every line with authenticity. I hope the advice I share will help you find your place within the industry and provide the skills needed for a decades-spanning career.

A stage actor of distinction who has also enjoyed a formidably prolific career in film and television, Brian Denis Cox CBE is a performer of great versatility. He is best known on screen for gruff authority figures, benign and malign, and for his skill at endowing even the most loathsome of them with an eerie humanity.

Brian played Logan Roy in HBO’s hugely successful series Succession. His performance earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series and a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series.

He has also won two Olivier Best Actor awards, for Titus Andronicus and Rat in the Skull. His most notable film credits include Ken Loach’s award-winning Hidden Agenda, Braveheart, The Boxer, Wes Anderson’s Rushmore, X-MEN 2 (2003), TROY, The Bourne Identity & The Bourne Supremacy, and The Escapist, amongst many others. His stage credits include the National Theatre’s King Lear, Richard III, The Music Man, Art, and Uncle Varick.
