Haze
Haze is the new single and music video from Latina singer, songwriter, producer, and synth goddess Alexis de la Rocha, who was born and raised in Los Angeles. Inspired by David Lynch’s Twin Peaks theme, and David Bowie’s instrumentation in Laybyrinth, “Haze” is a seductive sonic offering.
According to de la Rocha, the title “Haze” refers to the cloudiness of the mind during depression. It’s tied in with clearing your path through the haze during those minutes when you are not yourself or ready to be simply the version of yourself that you imagined. She explained that her vocals are haunting, repeating the inside voices that repeat in the psyche. Haze is about remembering the bad times and finding the good in them, learning what you can learn from them, and moving on stronger. Because you are overcoming the pain, your grief and heartache are acceptable.
Art and music are profound in De La Rochas’s life, and in those minutes when she feels overpowered, she is ready to find understanding through her creative cycle and self articulation, she she hopes her music can help people connect and feel at ease.
Alexis De La Rocha
Alexis de la Rocha has performed and made music for her entire life, from dancing at age three and first piano lessons at age seven, to acting in talent shows, and plays all through high school and c.ollege De la Rocha then honed her artistic abilities in production, directing, and acting while attending UCLA’s film school.
These abilities would lead her to high-profile positions as music festival director for LALIFF, Amazon, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Clippers, and many other organizations. Yet, it was after school, while holding a job at the now gone Los Angeles radio station, Independent 103.1, when she understood that music was her calling.
Beatmo
De la Rocha is maybe best known as the front lady of the Los Angeles exploratory band, BEATMO, which she helped to establish in 2006. Beatmo’s hits, including “Unheard March,” “From the Water,” and “Orale” demonstrate De La Rocha’s strong personality and mixed inspiration, from her youth love of Madonna, the 1984 film The Neverending Story, and David Bowie’s adapted synth soundtrack to 1986 film Labyrinth, to the dance, hip-hop, and R&B music of her adolescent and school years.
According to De La Rocha, those delicious sounds of freestyle, house, trip-hop, electronic, grunge, hip-hop, R&B, and so much more live in her mind because she grew up in the eighties and nineties. She remembers wanting so badly to be Björk when I reenacted Dave Gahan in “Enjoy the Silence.”
Writing Music
After working with Beatmo for a few years, De La Rocha started using her Roland Juno-6 to write music on her own in GarageBand. She eventually learned how to use Ableton. This composing helped her sharpen in her synth dream pop style, pulling motivation from Bowie and the soundtrack to the exemplary 1982 tragic film about Los Angeles, Blade Runner.
De la Rocha started her second band, LJ Laboratory (previously LEX), which performed with Daft Punk at SXSW, W Hotels, and a Los Angeles Theater Company event that was sold out.
De la Rocha’s dynamic performances at festivals such as Snow Globe Music Festival, Pride (Los Angeles, San Diego), KABOO, Treefort, and others have endeared her to new audiences. Her transformative stage presence as a singer, musician, and artist leaves fans wanting more.
Solo Career
De la Rocha gave birth to a daughter after sensing the pull of motherhood after the band’s breakup. She admitted that the transition to full-time motherhood was difficult, and adjusting to her new life was a challenge. She explaine that she was missing her music life, so she continued to write and embarked on a musical journey to discover who she was in this new life chapter.
One outcome was her 2021 single, “Chill,” composed with long-lasting associate and homeboy VFRESH. De la Rocha is getting ready to perform once more and release even more music this year. Her most recent song, “Haze,” contains intimate thoughts, visions, and inner reflections.
