I interviewed Jeff Fulmer about his life and career, the story of his new book, American Prophet, and what inspired his main characters.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

My name is Jeff Fulmer.   I live in Tennessee with my wife.   We enjoy watching the wildlife, travelling when we can, being with friends and family.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

I read a lot as a kid, and post college.  The idea or possibility of writing was always there.

When did you take a step to start writing?

I worked my way up to it.  I started trying to write scripts because it was fewer pages and words.   I learned that writing screenplays is a completely different discipline, but the process taught me how to plot a story.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

It took about nine months to write and another few months to release Hometown Prophet.  That was really the first book I felt good enough to release on my own.

How long did it take you to complete your latest book from the first idea to release?

Six months to write and another six or so to release it.

Focusing on your latest release. What made you want to write American Prophet?

There was a political issue in Tennessee.  Our State Legislature expelled two (black) members for protesting gun violence.  That triggered a lot of feelings that had been building-up over the last few years.

What were your biggest challenges with writing American Prophet?

Editing can be a grind.

Who or what inspired you when creating your Protagonist?

The way Jesus dealt with his critics and enemies.  More recent examples include Martin Luther King and Taylor Swift.

Who or what inspired you when creating your Antagonist?

I guess the main antagonist is a composite of a lot of conservative talk radio hosts I’ve heard (and endured) through the years.  And the people who allow themselves to be swayed by hate.

What is the inciting incident of American Prophet?

Being asked to be a prophet – again.   And the first dream.

What is the main conflict of American Prophet?

I’m not sure that it doesn’t boil down to forces of love (forgiveness) versus hate (condemnation.)   It’s the same battle that goes on inside of every person every day.

Did you plot American Prophet in advance, or fly by the seat of your pants and write freely?

I’m usually a plotter, but this was a ‘seat of my pants’ experience.  Some days, I looked forward to writing to see what would happen next.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did American Prophet need?

I always need more help than I think.  My wife read it a couple of times before I gave it to a professional copy editor.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a story?

Go for it.   Get it on paper – and shape it later.

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

We’ll see if Peter has any more dreams but, at the moment, I don’t have anything planned.

And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

Yes, there is a sense of accomplishment that I’ve gotten the book this far.   I don’t know if it’s worth the effort, but it’s what I needed to do.
