Synopsis

A phone call from the anxious husband of a murdered woman brings Private Investigator, Benedict Aberthorp, into the sinister world of his first murder case. When his new client tells Benedict he is the police’s prime suspect, Benedict agrees to help him. But what is the significance of his new client’s brown raincoat? And why was a similar one found at the murder scene?

When Benedict starts interviewing those close to the murdered woman, he suspects they all have secrets they are keeping from him. And before he can get anywhere, he needs to find out what those secrets are.

A murder mystery with many layers and motives. What are they all hiding and who has the most to gain by the victim’s death?

Revenge, love, past hurts, jealousy – all have their part to play in this dark, catalytic whodunnit.

But Benedict Aberthorp, the truth gatherer, does not give in easily.

“Benedict and his assistant, Gail, must uncover the secrets being kept from them by the small group of suspects in Seagrove,” explained P.M.A. Hayes. “People who he finds have frustrated lives and are trying to deal with their own disappointments in their own ways. He suspects that revenge is a strong motive. But what Benedict doesn’t count on, is how old some of these secrets are, and why does one suspect in particular want to be free of the past?”

“Having grown up in Gisborne, on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand, I have always loved the sea. In my thirties I studied part-time at Auckland University and graduated with a BA degree in Sociology. Then, while working as a health professional, I set out to write a novel. This required more study, including a post-graduate Creative Writing paper at Massey University.

Editing and Proofreading by Scribendi

“When I was younger, I loved to read Agatha Christie. Later it was authors such as Iris Murdoch, Patricia Highsmith, Philip Roth, Margaret Atwood, Anne Tyler, Joyce Carol Oates, Mari Jungstedt, Henning Mankell, Karin Alvtegen, and Karin Fossum. These days, I love to read New Zealand crime writers, such as Nikki Crutchley, J D Pomare, Paddy Richardson and many more.

“On retiring, I wrote a crime novel called Code Me Missing. Subsequent work was done with John Dean, a Scottish crime writer, and I also completed a mystery and thriller writing course. For Murder Press 3 is my first novel with a private investigator as the protagonist.”
