A world-class creative team, including two-time Tony Award-winning writer Joe DiPietro (What’s New Pussycat?), and director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes and The Pajama Game), who has won three Tony Awards, bring Sinatra The Musical to life.
It is New Year’s Eve, 1942, and a skinny 27-year-old Italian American singer is going to step onto the stage of New York’s Central Theater and give a performance that will change musical history. As Frank Sinatra’s career explodes, he struggles to balance the his life with Nancy, his wife, and the demands and temptations of being America’s most popular. But when he gets into an intense relationship with movie star Ava Gardner, his records stop selling, and the press starts to hate him.
Sinatra uses his unparalleled talent and unwavering determination to stage the greatest comeback in showbusiness history, motivated by his love for his family.
Joe DiPietro said that growing up, there were two pictures hanging in his grandma’s kitchen, the Pope and Frank Sinatra. To sit down with Tina Sinatra, hear stories about her father that no one else knows, and then perform those stories on stage makes for a thrilling and unexpected musical.
They will show you how the man became a legend and how, ultimately, the legend was just a man. Additionally, he is beyond thrilled that Birmingham Rep, where he worked on What’s New, Pussycat?, will host the world premiere.
Joe DiPietro is the winner of two Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award, and three Outer Critic Circle Awards. There have been thousands of productions of his plays and musicals all over the country and the world. His new satire, Babbitt, featuring Matthew Broderick, will debut at La Jolla Playhouse autumn. What’s New Pussycat?, his most recent musical, when it premiered at The Rep last year, received praise from critics and audiences alike.
Kathleen Marshall, choreographer and director, hopes to create an evening of theater that is as stylish, sophisticated, and elegant as Mr. Sinatra, with glorious music from the American Songbook. She shared that she is beyond thrilled to return to the UK, which feels like her second home, to bring the story of the legendary Frank Sinatra to the stage at the Birmingham Rep.
Tina Sinatra state that she is very happy about the new musical, and especially happy that they are going to give you a new perspective on her father for the very first time.
