Jeremy Bending worked as a hospital doctor and a consultant physician throughout his life. He continued to write fiction and short stories during that time, some of which were compiled in his 2018 book A Listening Doctor.

His first novel, In the Shadows of the Birch Trees, published in 2020, recounts the tale of a youthful Hungarian lady and her child who, by a twist of fate, escape the horrific mass murders being committed inside the Birkenau death camp in WW2. The book recounts the day to day routines they experience following their flight and that of the SS guard, Peter Leahy, who let them escape.
