A Classic Quest with a Meaningful Twist

Written by Lindsay Walker, this imaginative story follows two unlikely friends: Mabel, a curious and adventurous chicken, and Max, a thoughtful lynx. Together they embark on a quest for a lost jewel known as the Silver Chicken. What starts as a traditional treasure hunt quickly evolves into something far more rewarding as the pair encounters a colorful cast of animal characters along the way.

Readers meet a stylish frog, a musical grasshopper, and a graceful bird. Each new friend offers gentle insights about identity, confidence, and celebrating unique strengths. Through playful questions — such as whether chickens can fly, what lynxes eat, and what makes the best juggling balls — the story keeps children engaged while encouraging them to think about value in fresh ways.

Core Themes That Resonate with Young Readers

At its heart, the book shifts the focus from external treasures like pearls, sapphires, and rubies to internal treasures. It suggests that the greatest gifts are often unexpected and that friendship itself may be the most precious discovery of all. The narrative shows that the things we search for are sometimes closer to home than we realize.

These themes make the story especially relevant for today’s youngsters. It promotes self-acceptance, the joy of connection, and the importance of valuing who you are rather than what you have.

The Adventures of Mabel and Max – The Search for the Silver Chicken is structured across six short chapters, making it ideal for both independent reading and shared bedtime stories. Charming black-and-white illustrations bring the characters and their world to life, helping younger children stay engaged while supporting early readers as they build confidence.

Parents and educators will appreciate how the book works on multiple levels — as pure entertainment and as a springboard for meaningful conversations about friendship, individuality, and self-worth.

The initiative comes at a critical time, as reading engagement among UK children has reached its lowest level on record:

    • Only 1 in 5 children now read daily
    • Fewer than one third of children say they enjoy reading
    • 40% of adults have not read a book in the past year
    • Reading to young children has fallen sharply over the past decade
    • Children who enjoy reading consistently achieve stronger literacy outcomes

A Reluctant Hero and a Mysterious Sea Sprite

Jace Kit, the son of two washers, has spent his life stuck on shore while dreaming of grand adventures on the open sea. His world changes when a mysterious Sea Sprite named Sable washes ashore seeking help. Sable needs a hero to stop a ruthless dread pirate from killing the Ocean Queen and unleashing endless dark storms across the world.

Though Jace is a bit naive and relies on a boyish grin to navigate trouble, he chooses to believe in Sable’s magic. In turn, Sable puts her faith in Jace after discovering his legendary trinket—a supposed marker of heroism. The catch? Jace knows the trinket is fake. Still, with nothing but his sailing skills, a handmade boat, and this lie, he sets sail into the unknown.

High-Stakes Race Across a Mythical Ocean

The story unfolds across the mythical Remos Ocean, where Jace and Sable enter a dangerous competition. Their goal is to win a powerful ship fast enough to catch the pirate terrorizing the seas. Together, Jace’s practical sailing expertise and Sable’s magical abilities form an unlikely but effective partnership.

Yet the ocean depths hold more than just adventure. Sable carries hidden secrets darker than the inky waters themselves. As the journey progresses, Jace discovers that this dream-come-true quest may demand a far greater price than he ever imagined.

The novel mixes swashbuckling thrills with elements of folklore, tarot readings, and mythical sprites, creating a rich, immersive world. Readers will enjoy sea shanties, pirate vibes, and the magic of crafting new friendships along the way.

Themes of Courage, Honesty, and Pursuing Big Dreams

Beyond the action, A Sea of Ships and Souls explores timely messages about growing up. Jace knows what he wants—an adventurous life at sea—but questions whether it’s realistic given his ordinary background. The story gently reminds readers that it’s easy to lose sight of big dreams when life pushes toward safer or more expected paths. Keller emphasizes the importance of continuing to dream and work toward what truly matters, even when it feels impractical.

The book serves as a love letter to classic pirate adventures, the beauty of ocean sunsets, and the excitement of building your own story with new companions. It balances lighthearted fun with deeper reflections on courage, honesty, and deciding who you want to become.

    Perfect for Young Adult Readers

Written specifically with ages 12-18 in mind, this bubbly blend of fantasy and folklore offers accessible excitement without sacrificing emotional depth. It appeals to anyone who loves pirates, mythical creatures, high-seas races, and stories that mix magic with real personal growth.

An Enchanting Blend of Ancient Traditions

“The Warlock and the Ovate” creates a fully realized mythological world where Druidic wisdom meets the raw power of Norse sagas. The narrative draws deeply from Celtic traditions, including the revered roles of druids and ovates, while incorporating Viking warriors, runic elements, and the tension between fate and free will. This unique fusion produces a fresh perspective on classic myths, offering readers a harmonious clash between nature-revering mysticism and warrior spirit.

The result is a richly layered tale that feels both timeless and deeply immersive, appealing to fans of heroic sagas and fantasy adventures alike.

The Heroes at the Heart of the Quest

At the center of the story stands a warlock carrying the weight of a troubled past and an ovate whose prophetic visions may determine the fate of their world. Together, they embark on a dangerous journey filled with mystical challenges, dragon encounters, and tests of courage, honor, and sacrifice.

Their path revolves around the Duir—the sacred oak of Druidic tradition—which serves as a powerful living symbol of endurance, truth, and the bridge between realms. Far more than a simple backdrop, the oak becomes a vital presence that drives the plot and deepens the emotional resonance of the tale.

A World of Magic, Dragons, and Ancient Castles

Readers are transported to a realm of storm-lit ancient castles, frostbitten fjords where dragons soar overhead, enchanted woods that whisper forgotten truths, and mysterious underground domains. The story balances lyrical, poetic descriptions with propulsive action, creating an atmosphere where myth feels alive and the natural and spiritual worlds remain profoundly interconnected.

Moral conflicts arise at the very heart of this world, centered on the sacred tree where light confronts corruption. Heroes face dark sorcerers, celestial mazes, and forces that challenge both body and spirit, making every quest a profound test of character.

Powerful Themes of Redemption and Ancient Wisdom

Beyond its thrilling plot, the book explores deeper ideas of redemption, the rediscovery of purpose, and the enduring strength found in ancient beliefs. It reminds readers of the importance of courage, sacrifice, and harmony with the natural world while delivering an exciting adventure that entertains on multiple levels.

The narrative’s skillful pacing and vivid imagery make it ideal for anyone seeking a story that both thrills and inspires reflection on forgotten truths and timeless powers.

The Ginks By Paul B. Edwards Turns Monsters Under The Bed Into A Laugh-Out-Loud Adventure

On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, in The Ginks, Paul B. Edwards turns the classic fear of monsters under the bed into a wildly funny underground adventure packed with silly creatures, terrible poetry, and brave young heroines who discover that even monsters can be laugh-out-loud ridiculous.

Former international comedian Paul B. Edwards has traded punchlines for page-turners with his debut children’s fantasy novel, The Ginks. This humorous new book cleverly reimagines one of childhood’s most common fears—monsters under the bed—into a magical, mischievous underground world packed with quirky creatures, absurd situations, and plenty of laughs.

In The Ginks, Edwards blends fantasy adventure with light-hearted scares, creating a story that feels both exciting and reassuring for young readers. It’s the perfect read for children who love tales like The Spiderwick Chronicles or Diary of a Wimpy Kid meets classic monster mayhem, but with a much sillier twist.

    What Is The Ginks About?

Abigail is convinced that mischievous monsters called Ginks live under one of the beds in her room. Whenever she gets into trouble, they try to pull her down into their hidden cave. One chaotic Friday the 13th, a disastrous family Monopoly game with her cousins Katie and Rosie spirals into something far more extraordinary.

When Rosie disappears, Abigail and Katie are dragged into the bizarre underground realm of the Ginks. There they meet the Ginkmaster—a terrifying yet ridiculous leader who desperately loves writing poetry but can never quite finish a verse. This poetic failing, it turns out, is shared by all Ginks.

Armed with courage, creativity, and Abigail’s mysterious teddy-bear parasol, the girls must navigate strange creatures, unexpected allies, and laugh-out-loud predicaments to rescue Rosie and find their way back home. The story ends with a fun twist: are the Ginks really gone, or is this just the beginning of the adventure?

A Perfect Balance of Silly and Spooky

The Ginks stands out in the crowded children’s fantasy genre because it gets the tone just right. It delivers enough spooky fun to thrill young readers without ever becoming too frightening. The not-so-bright monsters, unfinished funny poems, and ridiculous situations keep the mood light and entertaining throughout.

Parents will appreciate a children’s book that encourages imagination and bravery while turning fear into something empowering and hilarious. Kids will love the fast-paced action, eccentric characters, and the idea that even monsters can be comically flawed.

    Paul B. Edwards

Paul B. Edwards brings a unique comedic voice to children’s literature. For twenty-five years, he performed as a stand-up comedian at festivals, comedy clubs, and venues across the UK and internationally. He ran his own comedy show in Oslo for eight years and earned the unusual distinction of becoming the first-ever comedy headline act at the World Nettle Eating Competition.

Beyond comedy, Edwards has lived a wonderfully eclectic life: he’s worked as a wedding celebrant, been ordained as a Dudeist priest, become a Lord of Sealand, and spent eight years as a tour guide in his hometown of Nottingham. He has also delivered comedy workshops in schools and served as a creative “ideas” specialist for Merlin Entertainments.

When the pandemic halted live performances, Edwards retrained as a civil servant. With newfound free time on weekends, he returned to his passion for writing, resulting in the creation of The Ginks.

The idea began with a simple childhood fear: what if the monsters under the bed were real? It’s an imaginative thought most people can relate to. From checking under the bed before bedtime to sleeping with the lights on, we all had a childhood fear that, looking back, makes us laugh. I wanted to turn that fear into something funny, adventurous, and a little bit ridiculous. The Ginks may seem frightening at first glance, but they are also clumsy, chaotic, and not particularly bright. At its heart, the story celebrates imagination, courage, and the creative ways children learn to face their fears.

    Paul B. Edwards

Why The Ginks Is a Must-Read for Young Fantasy Fans

This debut novel captures the magic of childhood imagination while delivering:

    • Relatable fears turned into fun: Perfect for any child who’s ever worried about what’s lurking under the bed.
    • Strong young heroines: Abigail, Katie, and Rosie show courage, quick thinking, and teamwork.
    • Humour that appeals to all ages: Silly monsters and laugh-out-loud moments that parents can enjoy reading aloud.
    • Scope for more adventures: The ending leaves readers wondering whether the Ginks will return, hinting at potential future books.

The Ginks is an ideal gift for children aged 7–11 who enjoy fantasy, adventure, and funny stories. It’s also a great choice for teachers and parents looking for engaging bedtime reads that spark creativity and conversation.

The Beginning of a New Storytelling Journey

With The Ginks, Paul B. Edwards proves that comedy and children’s fantasy make an excellent combination. His years of making audiences laugh have translated beautifully into a whimsical world where monsters are real, poetry is tricky, and even the scariest situations can end in giggles.

If you’re searching for a fresh, funny children’s fantasy book with heart, imagination, and plenty of monster-sized laughs, The Ginks is definitely worth adding to your bookshelf. Who knows—after reading it, you might start checking under the bed with a smile instead of a shiver.

    Imran Abbas

Imran Abbas brings twenty years of classroom teaching experience to his writing. As a dedicated educator, he understands exactly how to spark young imaginations and hold children’s attention from the first page to the last. Balancing family life as a married father of two, Abbas crafts his stories during late-night sessions, often powered by strong tea and a vivid imagination that turns history and mystery into unforgettable adventures.

For nearly twenty years, I’ve worked in the classroom, inspiring young minds and earning just as much from them in return. Teaching has shaped the way I write — helping me turn complex ideas into meaningful, engaging stories rooted in curiosity, resilience, and those small but powerful moments that shape who we become.

Some of my best ideas arrive long after the house has gone quiet. I believe stories should spark wonder, stir emotion, and stay with you long after the final page. My writing is character-driven, heartfelt, and often carries a gentle sense of adventure. This is just the beginning of my journey as a writer — and I’m excited for what comes next!

Goldbeard’s true legacy wasn’t just his stolen riches. He left behind an intricate web of riddles and clues, carefully designed so that only the cleverest and most persistent adventurers could ever hope to find his hidden treasure. When fragments of this centuries-old mystery suddenly resurface, Beau is pulled into an epic quest far beyond anything she imagined.

    • Simple ways to make garden birds feel even more “super”

These elements turn reading time into a springboard for real-world exploration.

At the back of the book, children can add a photo of themselves. This special page serves as a gentle reminder that, just like the amazing birds in the story, they too are super. It’s a charming way to build confidence and connection with nature.

It’s a gift that keeps on giving—encouraging families to head outdoors, spot birds, and enjoy quality time together in green spaces. Whether used for bedtime stories, a backyard bird safari, or as a companion on woodland or seaside walks, the book transforms ordinary moments into adventures.

Spring is the ideal season to tune into the natural world as birds become more active and vocal. Even short periods outdoors can support mental wellbeing for both children and adults, making this book especially timely.

    About the Author and Illustrator

Annabel Marriott is a teacher, therapist, and nature enthusiast based in Eastbourne on the south coast of England. She drew inspiration for Super Birds! during a walk with her dogs in London’s Ravenscourt Park, where the sounds of birds sparked her imagination. Passionate about wildlife and early education, this is her first picture book for young children.

Ruth Coggins, who lives in Devon, was the ideal collaborator. A Magical Birthday Gift Changes Everything

The adventure centers on eight-year-old Tyrese Thompson from Birmingham, who believes his birthday has already reached peak perfection. That changes when he unwraps his gift: a Mad Tab 2.0 tablet. What appears as an ordinary device conceals an extraordinary secret upgrade, transforming it into the Secret Adventure Machine, or SAM.

This innovative gadget becomes far more than a plaything. Each night around 10 p.m., SAM opens portals that transport Tyrese instantly across the globe. One moment he is at home; the next, he experiences Paris at sunrise, the Amazon jungle by midday, or the vibrant streets of New York City after dark. The story emphasizes how imagination often proves the most powerful force, turning everyday technology into a gateway for extraordinary experiences.

    Superpowers, Friends, and High-Stakes Chases

As Tyrese embarks on these nightly journeys, SAM reveals additional surprises. When threats emerge, the machine grants temporary superpowers such as flight, invisibility, super speed, and telekinesis. What begins as sightseeing evolves into missions of survival and bravery.

In the titular New York adventure, Tyrese befriends a local boy named Chad. Together, they explore iconic landmarks including the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. The excitement intensifies as they encounter mysterious villains determined to capture SAM’s power.

At the heart of the danger lies a hidden microchip within the device, containing top-secret information sought by its original creator, the sinister Mr. Mad. This antagonist will stop at nothing to reclaim it, adding layers of suspense to Tyrese’s travels.

Throughout the perils and thrills, Tyrese grows into a true hero. He discovers that heroism stems not from physical strength but from courage, quick thinking, and holding onto the joy of childhood. The narrative encourages readers to look beyond screens, appreciate the extraordinary in the everyday, and nurture curiosity even amid pressures to constantly upgrade or conform.

    Sandra Jackson-Trench

Sandra Jackson-Trench draws from her background in education, her B.A. in English and Drama, and her passion for travel and making new friends. Living in Birmingham after being born in London, she infuses the story with authentic enthusiasm for adventure and global discovery.

    Kindle Unlimited Banner

As a creative educator, she crafts tales that engage young audiences effortlessly, pulling them into fast-moving worlds. The Secret Adventure Machine – The Big Apple marks the first installment in a planned series, promising more imaginative journeys that combine modern gadgets with timeless storytelling.

Perfect for children who enjoy action-packed tales with humor, mystery, and the excitement of worldwide exploration, this book sparks imagination and reminds readers that the best adventures often begin right at home—with a spark of wonder and a brave heart.

A Story That Extends Beyond the Pages

The tale centers on a forgetful elf who has misplaced something precious, prompting children and adults to join in solving the mystery. Through following clues, venturing into nature, and discovering hidden surprises, the narrative transforms reading time into an active adventure. Families are encouraged to step outside, whether in a backyard, local woodland, or any green space, to recreate the magic by laying out trails, creating paths with natural materials, and uncovering whimsical elements along the way.

The book includes practical features such as cutouts to enhance the storytelling and a sample map for setting up clues. These elements make it easy for parents to turn the story into hands-on activities, fostering teamwork, curiosity, and imagination that continue long after the final page.

Combating Screen Time with Nature and Connection

In an era when young children often face excessive screen exposure from an early age, this book serves as a refreshing alternative. It promotes shared reading experiences that encourage conversation, laughter, and physical play in the natural world. By gently guiding families away from indoor digital distractions, it helps build lasting memories through exploration and discovery.

The series as a whole aims to inspire quality family time outdoors, sparking creativity and a sense of wonder. Each story offers opportunities to learn about the environment while strengthening bonds across generations.

    Robert Fidgett

Robert Fidgett drew from more than 40 years as a qualified youth worker specializing in outdoor education. Growing up in Brixton, he developed a passion for nature through local youth club adventures. This early love led to a career designing programs that build confidence, resilience, and a spirit of exploration for young people and families.

The idea for the book emerged about 16 years ago during a simple walk with his dog. He arranged sticks into an arrow path leading to a small mud door at a tree base, creating a “fairy village” surprise. When his young child discovered it the next day, the joy and belief in the magic left a lasting impression. This personal experience, along with fond memories from his own children’s woodland walks, inspired him to create similar enchanting moments for other families through stories.

    Dani Pasteau

Dani Pasteau, a Surrey-based illustrator and creative leader with over 25 years of experience, brings warmth and vibrancy to the pages. Her artwork captures lively energy, clarity, and a welcoming magical quality that makes the elf’s world feel alive with charm and outdoor wonder. From childhood doodling to professional work in children’s books, advertising, and private commissions, her style perfectly complements the storytelling, inviting children to pause, observe closely, and immerse themselves in the scenes.

A Lifetime of Stories Finally Shared

Monica Lester grew up in South London, where her two elder sisters taught her to read at an early age. She has always loved writing and storytelling. After building and later selling a successful children’s wear company, she moved to rural South West France in 1990 with her late first husband, Harvey. It was there, surrounded by golden fields and quiet villages, that they welcomed three cherished rescue dogs into their home—one of them the real Tomas Tobias.

Monica first wrote the story of Tomas in 1997–1998, capturing his adventures with affection and a touch of creative re-imagining. The manuscript remained tucked away in a box file for many years. After remarrying in 2009 and returning to England in 2011 with her second husband Eric—who shared her deep love of dogs—Monica rediscovered the tale. Now living in North Norfolk, she decided the time had come to bring Tomas’s story into the world, dedicating it in memory of Harvey and turning it into a heartfelt legacy.

Tomas and the Road to Home is not a glaring razzmatazz book, more a story of how we all must overcome obstacles. There is a quiz at the end, which children have told me they enjoyed immensely.

The story is about a very, very small dog, who has to find his way to a forever loving home. He does this with help along the way, adventures, and humour. The illustrations are charming, colour-washed and gentle. The main dogs’ characters are real, and lived with us (my late first husband and I) in the 1990s.

    The Little Dog’s Courageous Quest

Tomas And The Road To Home by Monica Lester on The Table Read Magazine
Tomas And The Road To Home by Monica Lester

The story begins on a French farm, where Tomas is born the smallest in a lively litter of puppies. Feeling overlooked and undervalued because of his size, the brave little dog makes a big decision: he runs away in search of a home where he will be loved for who he is.

What unfolds is a series of charming adventures across the sunlit countryside of South West France. Along the way, Tomas meets a delightful cast of animal friends who help him on his journey:

    • Fellow dogs of many different breeds
    • A clever and friendly rat
    • A quick-witted fox
    • A busy, kind-hearted squirrel
    • And the unforgettable Ginger, a Romany dog full of circus stories and tales of a wandering gypsy life

Through challenges, moments of fear, and bursts of joy, Tomas discovers important lessons about curiosity, courage, and compassion. The narrative is sprinkled with gentle humour and genuine emotion, while also introducing young readers to a few simple French words alongside their English meanings, offering a soft and natural introduction to another language and culture.

    Illustrations That Glow with Sunshine

Peter Kavanagh’s illustrations bring the story to vivid life. His colour-washed drawings capture the warm light and open landscapes of rural France—rolling hills, quiet lanes, and sun-drenched farms—while giving each animal character expressive personality and timeless appeal, with a style that echoes the joyful energy of Quentin Blake.

A Book with Heart and Purpose

First published to raise funds for Mesothelioma UK, a charity supporting those affected by asbestos-related cancers, Tomas and the Road to Home sold out two print runs in support of this meaningful cause. The book holds special significance for Monica, who honours her late husband Harvey through this labour of love. Now more widely available, it invites readers of all ages to share in Tomas’s journey.

Perfect for reading aloud or enjoying independently, the book speaks especially to families who have welcomed rescue animals into their lives. It carries gentle lessons about empathy, perseverance, and the quiet joy of finding one’s true home.

In an age of hurried stories, Monica Lester’s debut stands out as a slow, sun-warmed treasure—proof that some tales, like some friendships, are worth waiting for. Tomas may have travelled a long road, but thanks to a storyteller with a big heart, that road is now open for everyone to follow.
